Lord’s Upanishad-The true path
“Om. Everything is the whole. The visible is the whole. The invisible is the whole. From the whole, the visible universe has come out. The whole remains ever itself even if the entire universe has come out of it” – Upanishad
Before we dwell on ‘the whole’ let’s try and understand what’s visible and invisible. When you say visible, it means “that which can be perceived by senses”. It includes you, me, the universe, all form of life, animate and inanimate objects. Invisible is the one that cannot be perceived by senses. Can you think of something which is invisible? Invisible are the space, time and causation. Can you perceive space? There is a space between you and me. Can you see it? Feel it? No. can you see the distance between the earth and man? No. space is invisible. Though it can be felt in a subtle form. You can feel its effect but can’t sell it! The sun’s rays takes about 6 minutes to reach the earth because of the distance (space) between. You can’t see or feel the distance (space) but you receive sun’s rays 6 minutes after it leaves the sun. Also the ‘sling shot effect’ as it’s called in astronomy.
Similarly one cannot see or perceive time and gravitational force. But we feel its effects. When you throw an object in air it comes down to earth due to gravitational force. But you can’t see the force. Causation is the ‘to cause or effect some action’. First the invisible was created which is Space, time and causation. The aspect of material nature, causation gave birth to our visible universe. Initially, there was only space and time. Due to relentless effect of material nature, galaxies, stars, solar system, planets formed. As time went by due to chemical reaction (‘by causation’) life forms emerged and here we are, the product of invisible and the visible, debating as the existence of god.
Hence the visible universe is the effect of the invisible. But what caused them to happen? From where it came from? The invisible and the visible are the result of potential angry or ‘Maya’ of the Lord. From it came the invisible forces, whole relentless action created the visible universe. Though the invisible and the visible are the creation of the Lord, he is not changed or influenced by it. Due to relentless action of the material nature, galaxies are formed, destroyed, stars form and explode. The Lord (many call him Vishnu) is not affected by it. He is the creator, sustainer or the destroyer of the universe. His divine spirit permeates the entire universe. A true devotee of the Lord sees his manifestations everywhere.
